The
first of the five learning principles is:
·
Intelligence is the function of experience.
This
is saying that our intelligence is directly related to the experiences and
opportunities that we have had. In the past it was commonly thought that intelligence
was determined at birth and that all people had pre-established limits and/or
potentials to their intellectual capabilities. In recent years, research
has proven that intellectual potential is greatly enhanced by a positive environment
and positive learning opportunities. Both of these components have been incorporated
into our school goals.
The
ITI model uses the term “being there” to describe one very important kind
of learning opportunity. “Being there” could include an event, trip, or expert
guest speaker that provides the focus for school investigative study. This
integrates curriculum across the subject areas and connects the ‘real world’
to what is happening in school. As the Tongass staff develops curriculum that
incorporates “being there” experiences tied to our theme of “Tongass Treasures”,
we plan to provide many rich learning opportunities for our students. We
invite you as TSAS parents and families to join us in this effort.
